This account about Edwin from Volkmar of Germany, a FRIENDSofPITCAIRN member: "When I visited Pitcairn in January 2004, we stopped for two days in Rikitea on Mangareva to negotiate with the Tahitian authorities the final departure procedures of the motor catamaran Bounty Bay. In Rikitea we met Yves Scanzi, a very kind and German-speaking former French Foreign Legionnaire who lives on the island. He helped us as a tour guide. With his pick-up truck we discovered the most interesting sites of his island. During our short stay we met the grandniece of the famous Bounty trilogy co-author Charles Nordhoff. This amazing, nice lady is living in Rikitea and is working there as a school teacher. We also met Erwin Warren too. He is living with his wife and children in a very simple bungalow under trees in a little forest on the outskirts of Rikitea. The Mangarevian described Erwin as an 'outsider.' He has not been actively integrated into the common social life of this island. When we spoke to Erwin (I remember that Erwin could not speak and understand English, that's why we communicated through an interpreter, Yves), Erwin told us that he is descended from the Bounty mutineers. Some years ago he had to leave Pitcairn for private reasons and later, because of financial problems, he could not pay the charges for a ship passage to return. So he was 'stranded' and settled on Mangareva. With his agreement, we made a video message for his relatives on Pitcairn to transmit his personal greetings addressed to 'my family on Pitcairn.' Shortly after our landing on Pitcairn we presented Erwin's video message to the Pitcairners, but unfortunately there was no Pitcairn family who felt 'responsible' to receive the message. Yes, Erwin looks, with his long, grey-haired plait, like the 'living copy' of the Bounty mutineer John Adams as depicted in two portraits in the French Pitcairn book."
