PITCAIRN ISLAND STARTS NEW EXPORT

ANGWIN, CALIF. USA ------
Pitcairn Island, the famed South Pacific Ocean home of the 18th century mutineers of H. M.S. Bounty, has launched a new export - soap.

The product, being offered in Rose Geranium, Lime, and Lavender scents, is the Pitcairn business venture of skilled soap-maker Kerry Young, a seventh-generation descendant of Midshipman Edward Young of the Bounty. An abrasive type soap - Tea Tree - is also offered.

Young and his partner Heather nee Menzies arrived on Pitcairn in October 2006 to take up permanent residence on the island.

"I've been making soap for several years," said Young. "Only natural oils, predominately coconut, and some olive oil, are used. I import the scent since Pitcairn is not a large enough island to produce its own. "

He has been selling soap to passengers and crew of ships that call at Pitcairn, says Young, but is expecting to add mail order sales from customers around the world as demand increases.

"We just had an order from New York in the United States," said Young. "If anyone is interested, please don't hesitate to mail us for a price list at boodashoffshore@hotmail.com."

Young said he expects building materials for his new home on Pitcairn to arrive on a supply ship due to call at Pitcairn in May. "We were able to secure a part of the island called "Big Flower" as our home site. It is above and overlooks Adamstown, about 800 feet above sea level, with a 300 degree view of the island and key landmarks."

Pitcairn Island's other exports have include postage stamps, dehydrated fruits and vegetables, honey, and basketry and carved curios.
