Canoe boat shed reconstruction at Bounty Bay
Fish is a main source of protein for the Pitcairn diet. This means
fishing at least part of every week. Individual Pitcairners maintain
their own canoes from which they fish. These frail craft are kept
in a boat shed at the Bounty Bay landing which is now about fall
down. The shed protects the canoes from the frequent gales and storms
which lash Pitcairn Island. Termites and other bugs have now brought
the shed to near collapse.
A retaining wall must also be built to protect one side of the
boat shed. The Pitcairn Islands Study Center has teamed up with
the adventure clothing firm The North Face and GlobalGiving.com
to raise funds to reconstruct the shed.
