[Index]

ANDRE, Hattie --> BROWN, William

This is a work in progress. If you have information that adds to or changes an entry, you are invited to contact Herbert Ford at hford@puc.edu.

Andre, Hattie, Steley. Hattie Andre was a Seventh-day Adventist missionary-teacher who served on Pitcairn Island from 1893 to 1896. The technique of making many of the crafts sold by the Pitcairn Islanders today was taught by Miss Andre during her years on the Island.

Aunoa (?) (Warren), Lareau. Aunoa was a Mangarevan girl who in 1934 met and fell in love with Sterling Andrew Warren on the island of Mangareva. Sterling had been shipwrecked on James Norman Hall's ship 'Pro Patria,' on the sandspit called Temoe, and had made his way with other Pitcairners to Mangareva. Sterling and Aunoa wished to be married, but authorities would not allow the marriage because Sterling could not produce a birth certificate (which was on Pitcairn Island). Captain Irving and Electa Johnson of the sailing ship Yankee called at Mangareva, and find the Pitcairners shipwrecked there, agreed to take them back to Pitcairn. One the voyage, because of the clearly true love Sterling and Aunoa showed for each other, Captain Johnson, as was allowed at sea, married the couple, she using the bridal gown Electa Johnson had used on her wedding day.

Aunoa (?) (source?) was also known as Ruau Tahow (?). Her married name became Warren. She was the first Polynesian addition to Pitcairn since the original settlers. (For the children of Aunoa and Sterling Andrew Warren, see "Sterling Andrew Warren").

Bligh, William, Lareau. William Bligh was born Sept. 9, 1754, in Plymouth, Devon, England. He died Dec. 6, 1817, in London, England. He was the Captain of H.M.S. Bounty. As a girl in Norway, Kari studied to be a radio operator, and went to sea. She was fascinated by the 'Mutiny on the Bounty' when she read it at the age of 12 or 13. 'It was so far away from Norway and the school drag. We always identified William Bligh with our teacher at school … and all the girls wanted to play Fletcher Christian.' She was determined to see Pitcairn Island, and applied for permission to visit which took three years. The Island Council had agreed right away, but the Pitcairn Governor, at Fiji, wouldn't.
