Aunoa (?) (Warren), Lareau. Aunoa was
a Mangarevan girl who in 1934 met and fell in love with Sterling Andrew Warren
on the island of Mangareva. Sterling had been shipwrecked on James Norman Hall's
ship 'Pro Patria,' on the sandspit called Temoe, and had made his way with other
Pitcairners to Mangareva. Sterling and Aunoa wished to be married, but authorities
would not allow the marriage because Sterling could not produce a birth certificate
(which was on Pitcairn Island). Captain Irving and Electa Johnson of the sailing
ship Yankee called at Mangareva, and find the Pitcairners shipwrecked there, agreed
to take them back to Pitcairn. One the voyage, because of the clearly true love
Sterling and Aunoa showed for each other, Captain Johnson, as was allowed at sea,
married the couple, she using the bridal gown Electa Johnson had used on her wedding
day.
